Literature

Ida Harriet Carey (1891 – 1982) A prominent New Zealand portraitist and art teacher, Ida Carey was renowned for her sensitive portrayals of Māori including the Māori Queen Dame Te Atairangikaahu. Trained in Sydney under John Samuel Watkins, she was elected to the Royal Art Society of New South Wales in 1924 and exhibited widely in both Australia and New Zealand. A co-founder and long-time president of the Waikato Society of Arts, Carey’s decade-long series depicting Māori women with moko remains one of the most significant contributions to twentieth-century New Zealand portraiture.
