International Art Centre is delighted to present our forthcoming 24 March Important & Rare Art auction, a carefully curated sale bringing together exceptional works of both national and international significance.
Leading the sale is a magnificent portrait by Charles Frederick Goldie, Te Hau – Takiri Wharepapa. Of exceptional provenance, the work has remained in the same family collection since it was painted in 1920. It is offered alongside two further important works by Goldie, including the artist’s earliest known watercolour, last publicly exhibited in the landmark GOLDIE touring exhibition in 1999.
Gracing the catalogue cover is the exquisite Seaside Baches by Rita Angus, an elegant and historically important composition from the same distinguished private collection as a remarkable 1953 painting by Colin McCahon.
International interest is represented by a rare 1930 composition by Fernand Léger, Deux Femmes, originally acquired from Waddington Galleries, London, and held within a notable collection that includes works by Ben Nicholson, Barry Flanagan, and Patrick Caulfield.
Among the most compelling New Zealand works in the sale are two early paintings by Michael Smither CNZM, dating from 1966 and 1969, offering collectors a rare opportunity to acquire works from the formative years of the artist’s career.
Further highlights are numerous, but standouts include two important paintings by Edward Bullmore, consigned directly from the artist’s family collection, together with an early work by Sir Grahame Sydney.
With numerous fresh-to-market works and several distinguished private collections represented, this promises to be one of the most exciting Important & Rare Art sales in recent years.
