Graham Kirk
Kirk’s imaginative blending of pop-culture icons and Superheroes set in New Zealand landscapes create a playful dialogue between fantasy and everyday life
Graham Kirk
(b. 1948, Hawera, Taranaki)
Graham Kirk began creating home-made comic strips at around nine years of age. He gained early recognition for both his photography and comic strips with group exhibitions in Auckland in the 1970s. From the late 1980 Kirk pivoted towards painting, developing his signature Superheroes in New Zealand Series. Long regarded for his imaginative blending of pop-culture icons set in local New Zealand landscapes his work features Superman, Wonder Women, Catwoman, Batman and others placed in his home base of Taranaki and Auckland settings. Other favoured subjects include Kermit, Miss Piggy and The Muppets. Kirk’s technique includes painting in acrylic with cotton-wool buds to achieve a unique stipple effect. His work demonstrates how contemporary art can engage popular culture and local environment with humour and talent.
