Henryk Szydlowski
‘All my paintings tell a story … it is vey meaningful to make people happy. I want to shock people, not through ugliness but through beauty’
Henryk Szydlowski
(b 1950, Poland)
Szydlowski gained an international reputation for creating unique paintings in a style he refers to as Fantasy Surrealism. His paintings blend European modernist influences from artists such as Kandinsky and Klee with his own imaginative vision. His imagery draws upon childhood memories, cultural motifs and a love of nature. There is a playfulness and glamour to his work.
In the late 1970s Szydlowski immigrated with his family to New Zealand and by the early 1980s was teaching at Whitecliffe College of Art and Design. For many years he has been based in Perth, Western Australia, exhibiting in Australia and New Zealand. His career has been celebrated in the richly illustrated book Doorway to Dreams, which captures the spirit and breadth of his artistic journey.
His works appear in private, public and corporate collections worldwide.
