Jane Martin
1950’s poolside playfulness is the focus of theses uplifting and enjoyable works, redolent in colour with a touch of nostalgia
Jane Martin
(b. 1967, Wellington)
Originally from Wellington, Jane has called Auckland’s North Shore home for the last 20 years. A change of direction saw this former commercial lawyer study painting at the Browne School of Art, participate in several group and solo exhibitions and most recently join other painters to work in Italy. Jane enjoys working in bright acrylics, which have the ability to instant mood elevation. She combines abstract painting with figurative work.
During a visit to the United States, Jane came across some old motel postcards featuring images from the 1950s. These postcards provided the inspiration for her latest series of works portraying 1950’s poolside fun. There is a degree of nostalgia to these paintings. The ‘50s were exuberant and hopeful times, the post-war outlook was positive and this mood is reflected in Jane’s palette of fresh, bright colours with contrasting pastels. These affectionate depictions hark back to simpler times and aim to put a smile on your face.
