Gabryel Harrison Exhibition - Florals to Landscape
In her first New Zealand solo exhibition since 2018, Gabryel Harrison moves fluidly between the intimacy of her internationally recognised floral paintings to the exciting expansiveness of landscape.
In her first New Zealand solo exhibition since 2018, Gabryel Harrison moves fluidly between the intimacy of her internationally recognised floral paintings to the exciting expansiveness of landscape. While her Canadian public are familiar with the landscape works, this it the first time they will be exhibited and available in Australasia. New Zealand born, Vancouver based Gabryel explores the continuum between bloom and horizon. Her richly layered surfaces evoke both the fragility and resilience of nature.
Gabryel Harrison was born in New Zealand and now lives and works in Vancouver, Canada. In 1980 she completed a BA in fine art at the University of Ottawa an later fulfilled post-graduate requirements to become an art therapist, a field she worked in from 1992 until 1996. Gabryel has been painting full-time since 1999.
Gabryel is a painter inspired by the natural world and in particular its botanical forms. In her hands, the temporality of our existence is revealed in the gestural abstractions of florals, foliage and landforms. Her large scale oils on canvas speak in washes, layers and heavily impastoed passages of our own brief transit through this mysterious universe. As a visual artist who also writes poetry, this art form and Harrison’s favorite poets are also a major source of inspiration for her work. Gabryel’s works are found in public and private collections across Canada, the USA, Australian and New Zealand.
