Artist Biography

James Watkins

(b. 1985, Waikato)

From 2003 James attended Elam School of Fine Arts and in 2005 joined International Art Centre as a represented artist. Speaking of his work James says: I aspire to make memorable paintings - taking particular interest in the architectural structures of New Zealand - both historical and contemporary. My works continue to evolve around the universal symbol of home as a place of heart and hearth, belonging and security.

Having long been drawn to the works of Charles Tole and Leo Bensemann, James began his own exploration of cubism. His 2019 solo exhibition, simply titled Cubism attracted further international sales. Later that year James attended the exhibition, Louise Henderson: From Life at Auckland Art Gallery which he acknowledges as playing an important role in the development of his work.

The latest series of works - Neighbours focuses of urban/townhouse living. Home is no longer comprised of a single dwelling but clusters of contemporary, architecturally designed dwellings with a sense of community.
