Cubist V

James Watkins, Timon Maxey

Oct 03 — Oct 31, 2022

Cubism is not a reality you can take in your hand. It's more like a perfume, in front of you, behind you, to the sides, the scent is everywhere but you don't quite know where it comes from. - Pablo Picasso

About The Artist

James Watkins

‘My works continue to evolve around the universal symbol of home as a place of heart and hearth, belonging and security’

About The Artist

Timon Maxey

Maxey often builds his compositions in interlocking shapes and stylised forms. He creates cubist landscapes of familiar New Zealand scenery, landmarks and birdlife from his own fresh perspective

North & South

An exciting group exhibition uniting the talents of four leading New Zealand artists under the banner of contemporary cubism. James Watkins, Lance O'Gorman, Timon Maxey and Brian Dahlberg present a tour de force of accomplishment. The cubist perspective, pioneered by Picasso and Braque at the beginning of the twentieth century is an intriguing one. It's a different way of seeing. Single point linear perspective gives way to multiple viewpoints within the picture plane. Cubism brings with it a sense of the ever-new, with subject matter reduced to geometric shapes, cubes and facets. Cubist V is an exhibition of visual and artistic exploration and expansion.
