Blue Duck Duo
The Blue Duck, which is depicted on the reverse side of the New Zealand ten dollar note, is a protected species specifically native to New Zealand. Living primarily by fast-flowing, clear mountain rivers in both the North and South Islands, they are known for their strong pairing bonds, with both males and females staying together and defending their territory. Captain James Cook saw the Blue Duck or Whio in Dusky Sound on his second voyage in 1777. Timon Maxey, a keen kayaker and tramper was inspired to paint this devoted pair when coming across them in their natural environment.
