Artist Biography
Eugenea
(B. Rostov-on Don, Russia)
Eugenea was born in the Southern Russian city of Rostov-on-Don, the daughter of painter Boris Belmasov and a graduate of the V.I. Surikov Russian Academy of Art, Moscow where she studied for six years. She moved to Brisbane in 1993 and on to Wellington in 1994 where she lived for many years, having taken New Zealand citizenship. Since that time, Eugenea has been represented by International Art Centre, exhibiting both here and off-shore. In 2022 Eugenea returned to Moscow retaining close links with the gallery.
Although Eugenea is best known for her paintings of ballerinas and stage performers, her subject matter is extensive. In 2011 a small series of works entitled Auckland Landmarks sold within days. The most recent series of small scale works, The Seaside Paintings also met with resounding success. Whatever the choice of subject, the work of this artist is readily identifiable. Eugenea often contrasts impasto - the thick application of oil paint - with finely painted skin tones - all to great and memorable effect.
