Artist Biography

Simon Williams

(b. 1961, Dunedin)

Simon Williams grew up in Mosgiel where he completed an apprenticeship in horticulture and landscape gardening. During the 1980s he lived and worked in Britain moving to Sydney in 1989. During a visit to the NSW Art Gallery he viewed works by Arthur Streeton, Tom Roberts and other artists from the Heidelberg School which encouraged him to begin painting. From these early beginnings his work sold well attracting numerous commendations and awards.

Living in Auckland since 1994, Simon Williams has long been acknowledged as one of New Zealand's leading landscape painters. His works are commissioned and enjoyed by an international clientele and hang in homes and collections worldwide, including that of President Bill Clinton following his visit to the gallery in 2002.

From the base of his Auckland studio Simon travels and paints extensively throughout the North and South Islands, visiting Europe on a regular basis with his wife Sarah. Over recent years he has completed impressive, large scale canvases of Venice. Since 2003 major solo exhibitions of his works are held bi-annually at International Art Centre.
